"PoliceI am in a series of entries describing the 45 different fatal car wrecks we had here in Atlanta in 2009. I am an Atlanta auto wreck lawyer, and to write these entries I am using data from the FARS database, a federal reporting system that I often consult for my cases. The FARS database is a “Fatality Analysis Reporting System” that compiles information about fatal car accidents that happen all across the United States. I am using the compilation of this data published at City-Data.com.

In my recent blog entries, I have been talking about the fact that Atlanta has an unacceptably high number of fatal crashes each year. I have been listing the fatal crashes that occurred in Atlanta in 2009 (the last year for which data is available). Over the next few entries, I also am going to look at what the statistics can teach us about the deaths that are occurring in car accidents in Atlanta. I am a car accident lawyer who practices in Atlanta and so certainly understanding this information is important to me professionally; however, a problem as serious as this one matters to all of us who live here in Atlanta, and even to people simply passing through on the highways that traverse our city.

In today’s entry I will be talking about the deadly car wrecks that occurred in Atlanta in the months of May, June, July and August.

Fewer people were killed in fatal car crashes in May than in any other month. Atlanta did see one fatal crash: on May 9, 2009, the driver of a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle accident was killed. The wreck took place on I-285 / SR-407 at 2:15 a.m.

However, reality crashed in again during the month of June when five people were killed in Atlanta automobile accidents.

The first accident of the month was a very deadly one. It took place on June 16, 2009, just after midnight, at 12:24 a.m. Two people died in a single-vehicle accident on Lawton Street in Atlanta.

Three days later, on June 19, 2009, a person died as the result of a two-car accident caused by a driver reported by Atlanta police to be DUI. That accident occurred at the intersection of Ponce De Leon / State Road 8 and N Eugenia Pl.

June 20, 2009, saw another intersection wreck. A drunk driver was killed when he crashed his car near the intersection of Briarcliff Rd. and St. Charles Pl.

Five days later, a horrific four-vehicle pile-up left one person dead. The June 25th Atlanta accident happened at 11:35 p.m. on I-85 / SR-403.

A driver died just four days later when he crashed his car on I-285 / SR-407 in Atlanta. That accident occurred at 12:20 a.m.

Two people were killed in car crashes in the city limits of Atlanta in the month of July. On July 11, 2009, a drunk driver crashed with another vehicle at he juncture of Memorial Dr. / State Road 154 and Barge Rd.

One week later, on July 18, 2009, a pedestrian was killed while walking along D.L. Hollowell Parkway at 10:49 at night.

Three more people, one a pedestrian, died in traffic accidents on Atlanta roads in the month of August. The first deadly August wreck took place on August 8th where Mary George Ave. crosses Abner Place. Only one vehicle was involved in the collision, and the driver was listed as drunk at the time of the wreck, which took place at 12:35 a.m.

On August 15, 2009, a car killed a pedestrian who was walking along I-75 in Atlanta at 6:33 p.m. The very next day, another person was killed on I-75, this time at the S Central Ave. exit. Two vehicles were involved in the August 16, 2009, wreck. Although the auto crash took place at 10:30 a.m., one of the drivers reportedly had been drinking.

Tomorrow I will finish up the series of entries on 2009 deaths from car accidents in Atlanta.
