Athens, Georgia, home of the Bulldogs, is a vibrant and interesting town. Unfortunately, though, car accidents in Athens – like anywhere else – can injure or even kill people. Because so many students and other people come to Athens, it has an unusually high proportion of traffic and highways. Additionally, the city has grown at an astronomical rate. Athens grew by a whopping 15% between 2000 and 2010. In 2000, the census found Athens’ population was 100,266. By the 2010 census, that number had grown to 115,452. The decade before had even more astonishing growth. In 1990, Athens had a population of 45,734, but by the year 2000, the census found that the city had grown by an absolutely astonishing 199.2%, to 100, 266 people. The growing population has increased traffic and the number of car wrecks occurring in and around Athens.

Some of the busiest areas of Athens – and the ones most likely to see serious car wrecks – include the Athens Perimeter (known at various points as State Route 8, 10 and 15), and U.S. Highways 29, 78, 78 business (Oconee St.), 129, and 441. Several busy state roads run in or near Athens as well. Georgia State Routes 72 and 106 run in or very near Athens, as do Georgia State Routes 316, State Route 8, and State Route 15.

A number of other streets also bear a great deal of traffic, and hence can be places where accidents are more likely to occur. Some of these streets include Alps Road/Hawthorne Avenue, Epps Bridge Parkway, Timothy Road/Mitchell Bridge Road, College Station Road, Gaines School Road, Broad Street, Milledge Avenue, Lumpkin Street, Prince Avenue, North Avenue and Oconee Street. Milledge Avenue is also known as State Route 15 Alt, Prince Avenue is known as State Route 15 Alt, and Oconee Street is also US 78 Business. Broad Street, also known as Atlanta Highway (US 78 Bus and State Road 10) crosses the city from east to west. State Route 10 Loop goes through Athens.
